Welcoming a new pet into your family is an exciting and rewarding experience, but with so many options available, choosing the right one can feel like a daunting task. From playful puppies to cuddly kittens, and everything in between, each animal comes with its own unique needs, temperament, and requirements. Making the decision to bring a pet into your home is not one to be taken lightly, as it requires careful consideration of factors such as lifestyle, living space, and family dynamics. Whether you're looking for a loyal companion for your children, a furry friend to share your empty nest, or a low-maintenance pet for a busy household, you'll want to make an informed decision. Finding Your Perfect Pet Match
To help with that, we asked animal behaviorist, author, trainer, and caregiver Ellie Laks for her professional insight on how to go about choosing the best pet for your family. Ellie has been working with animals since her childhood and now runs The Gentle Barn (www.gentlebarn.org), an organization that rehabilitates and offers sanctuary to animals. As an animal specialist, Ellie takes particular pride in being able to communicate with animals. She feels it’s an essential part of any pet/parent relationship and finds purpose in helping pet owners improve their relationships with the animals they adopt. Because choosing the perfect pet is such an important step in the process, we asked Ellie for her advice about pitfalls and plusses when it comes to finding a good match.

When choosing a dog or other pet, how can a potential pet owner better under- stand the characteristics of a specific breed?
Choosing a pet with the right personality and temperament is also important. Some animals are naturally high strung, while others enjoy copious down time. One factor that influences personality is whether the pet is naturally dominant or submissive. Ellie advises, “Determining dominance or submission is a bit trickier to the novice dog owner. When we meet an animal for the first time, they will illustrate submission by lowering their head a bit, wagging their tail, and looking away when you look them in the eye. A dominant dog will be more likely to hold their body upright and more rigid and not wag their tail. A submissive puppy will run away from a loud and strange sound, while a dominant puppy is more likely to run towards a scary sound.”

These are all essential considerations when picking a pet. Size may not seem like a big factor, but consider a chihuahua compared to a great dane and the differences become apparent very quickly. Evaluate the average size of the breed to figure out whether you have room for kennels and crates, food bowls, dog beds, and other supplies. You’ll also want to pair the size of the pet with the amount of space you have. While a mastiff might not be a good choice for a tiny home, it might be the perfect match for a suburban lot. Energy level is perhaps one of the most important considerations when it comes to choosing a pet, specifically dogs. It’s not a dog’s fault if they are anxious or bored and act out by chewing up the couch or running away from home. As a pet owner, it’s your responsibility to be realistic about how much exercise a dog needs and what you’re available to provide, so do your research. Ellie says, “People can google any breed and see how big they are and read about their energy level, like Pit bulls make great cuddlers, and Australian Shepherds make great jogging partners.”
When you meet a potential pet for the first time, consider its temperament to decide whether it’s a good fit for your family. If you have children and other pets, it’s best to avoid dominant personalities, if possible. However, sometimes you don’t realize a pet has dominant tendencies until it gets settled in at home. Ellie says, “Fear, stress, and anxiety play a part in how they behave when meeting us for the first time. If someone wants to know for sure, securing the advice and help of a dog behaviorist or animal communicator such as myself can help.”

What do you see as the primary reasons pets end up not being a good match? In other words, what do people fail to consider when choosing a pet? Ellie is very passionate about educating potential pet owners about the importance of making a well-informed choice up front. Look past the irresistible face and remember that a kitten or puppy won’t be little for long. If you’re considering another type of pet, make sure you understand that a large and talkative parrot can live 20, 50, or even 80 years. Similarly, bringing home a bearded dragon means signing up for ten years of care.

That’s a powerful sentiment. Many people obtain a pet impulsively. Unfortunately, that often doesn’t work out well for the pet or the family. Ellie says, “A puppy might look helpless and easy when they are tiny, but as they grow their needs and energy level change. People need to make sure that they can accommodate a pup, not just when they are tiny and napping all the time, but when they are larger, and have much more energy. There are many different breeds and ages in the shelter sadly, but I have noticed that the majority are about a year old, when they have more demands for attention and exercise. If the people would just take them out more often and stay in for another six months, the dog would mellow out and they would end up with a soulmate for life. But many give up and break the heart of their family and the animal.” Even if you do your best when deciding whether you can meet the needs of a pet, sometimes your situation changes. However, your commitment shouldn’t. If you no longer work from home, have to travel, or become injured, make sure you remain committed to providing for your pet.
Ellie explains,
I think that most people see someone cute and take them home without understanding what that particular animal needs and will need as time goes by. A puppy is just like a baby, they need stimulation, exercise, and lots of attention and affection. It is a full-time job and should only be taken on by someone who is home and has the time to raise a baby.

We’ve talked about some of the traits to consider when choosing a pet. What are the most important family lifestyle questions to ask during the process in order to make the best match? People should consider how often they are out of the home, if they have children or other pets, and how active their lifestyle is. If someone works full time, a young active dog will not work, but two older dogs could be happy to rest while they are at work and have each other for company. If someone has children or other animals, a submissive dog is a must. Just like us, animals have different personalities, likes, and dislikes. Some enjoy cuddle time, others want to be active. If a person is active, then an active dog will work, however if they just want to relax after work, a dog who enjoys being a couch potato will work perfectly. If someone has no other animals or kids, is home most of the time, has no physical limitations or restrictions, they can adopt pretty much any dog and make it work. And remember, dogs and cats are pack animals and are always happier with a friend! In addition to Ellie’s suggestions, also evaluate your need for a clean home, allergies, and how you feel about clutter caused by pet accessories like litter boxes, tanks, cat scratchers, toys, and food storage.

When is a rescue or older dog a better choice? This was an easy one for Ellie, who remarked, “I think a rescue dog is always the better choice! There are so many wonderful animals out there who have been abandoned through no fault of their own. Making room for one or two of them in your home and heart will make everyone happy. I am a big fan of the older dog. Unlike with a puppy, you know who you are getting; they are full grown, and their personality is set. They are most likely already potty trained. They are not so hyper or active and will probably be grateful to be with you and not demand as much as a young dog would. A puppy can seem alright with children and other animals and still grow up to be dominant If a dog or cat isn’t in the cards, what other types of pets might be better to start with? “I think bunny rabbits make excellent indoor pets! They can be easily litterbox trained, are very affectionate, do not and not so safe for them, but an older dog will not surprise you, they will either be safe and submissive with children and other animals, or not. The loyalty, gratitude, and affection of an older dog cannot be matched!” require being walked, and are so fun to play and cuddle with. I would highly encourage getting two as two animals together are always happier than one by themselves when you are out.”

If you prefer firmer yolks, cook for a few minutes longer. 9. Remove the skillet from the heat once the eggs are cooked to your liking. 10. Garnish the Shakshuka with chopped parsley or cilantro, if desired. 11. Serve the Shakshuka hot directly from the skillet, with crusty bread or pita bread for dipping. 6. Crack each egg into a small bowl or ramekin, then carefully pour each egg into one of the indentations in the sauce. 7. Season the eggs with a sprinkle of salt and pepper. 8. BATHROOM TRENDS ALERT LET’S TALK BIDETS
The first reference to a bidet as we know it today dates back to the early 1700’s, when it became a popular way to cleanse private parts in between weekly bathing. Starting in France, the product was quickly adopted by Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Japan. Its popularity has also spread to Venezuela, Argentina, Uruguay, Greece, Turkey, and Egypt. Yet the idea of a bidet still leaves North Americans feeling a bit puzzled about their benefits and how to even use them. Seriously, just look at social media and chat rooms to find countless questions about these basic, yet seemingly exotic, porcelain wonders.
Typically reserved for the wealthiest households, bidets were first seen in Europe in the early 18th century and became a popular option for the elite over the next few decades. This was the time of chamber pots, so bidets were commonly seen in the bedroom next to the pot. When a user finished their chamber pot business, he or she would then straddle the water-filled bidet to clean up. The word bidet means small horse in French so if you can imagine mounting a horse, you can visualize the experience. Around 1750 new advancements added a hand pump, which allowed the user to pump water from the bowl through a hose for easier and more sanitary washing. Next came the free standing bidet. This model came along in the early 1900’s when indoor plumbing improved to the point that bathrooms became common in households. They are still the type most commonly seen throughout Europe and Asia, and offer an automatic water stream rather than requiring a manual pump. HISTORY OF BIDETS
So let’s talk about the what, how, and whys of bidets.
In short, a bidet is a device that provides a stream of water for cleaning up after doing your bathroom business. They come in many forms, with the most common being a standalone device that’s shaped like a toilet but is equipped with a water jet for cleanup. In most places, a bidet is a separate unit from the toilet. WHAT IS A BIDET?

Okay, so here’s the deal — it’s really not that complicated. Although it feels foreign to anyone used to a flushing toilet and toilet paper, there is a different method out there; maybe even a better one. A bidet can be used to clean private parts in the nether region, including the buttocks and genitals for all sexes. There are some modern adaptations to the original bidet that we’ll discuss a little later, but for now we’ll stick with the classic version that sits alongside the toilet as a separate unit. After using the toilet in the regular way or when you feel the need for a refreshing clean for any other reason, the user moves over to the bidet. You can face the stream of water, straddling the bidet, to wash the front side. Or, you can maintain a seated position in order to wash the backside. With the push of a button, the bidet will provide a stream of water that washes the area. Different systems offer varying amounts of pressure, so some work quickly and others take a bit longer. One of the most common questions about bidet use is whether you still use toilet paper to wipe or dry. The answer is mostly no, at least if you’re using a bidet in a traditional way. If the bidet is doing its job, the area will be clean after use. However, if you don’t feel it did an efficient job, you can still wipe with toilet paper. It is important to dry yourself after using a bidet so moisture doesn’t get trapped in the folds of your skin, which can cause skin irritation and medical issues. When it comes to dabbing off water, you have a few options. You can use a small amount of toilet paper to do the job. In Europe and other locations, bidet owners typically designate certain small cloths as ‘bidet towels’ used for the sole purpose of drying intimate areas after using the bidet. The most convenient and waste-free option is to use the drying feature built into many bidets. This setting provides a stream of air that dries the area without the need to dab. HOW DOES ONE USE A BIDET?
TYPES OF BIDET MODELS
There are three basic types of bidets. The first is the standalone unit we’ve already covered. This is the most expensive option, both for the unit itself and for the additional plumbing work required to hook it up. A standalone bidet also requires more space, so it may not fit all bathrooms. However, these units offer the largest range of features, from direction control to the option of using cold or hot water. Standard bidets may have one nozzle, meant for washing the posterior, or there may be two separate nozzles, aimed at cleaning the front and back separately. You may also see a combined unit that performs both tasks. Advanced bidet technology also provides different water spray patterns so you can choose from oscillating, pulsating, steady, or circular sprays. In addition to the standalone units, there are bidet seats that replace the standard toilet seat. These units provide many of the same features as a bidet without requiring a bathroom renovation. For example, you may find models that provide a remote, directional control for jets, temperature options, and pressure variations. Some also feature heated seats. TUSHY is one such brand of aftermarket bidet that’s on a mission to convert one household at a time by emphasizing that bidets eliminate up to 80% of toilet paper use. Miki Agrawal, Founder & Chief Creative Officer of TUSHY, hopes to take bidets mainstream. “Bidets are cheaper, healthier, and better for the planet” than toilet paper, says Miki. “TUSHY’s goal has always been to save the 15 million trees that are getting flushed down every year, save billions of gallons of water required to make the toilet paper and actually help clean bottoms properly, once and for all.” Finally, there is a bidet attachment you can connect to your plumbing. This device can be mounted anywhere in the bathroom as long as it can reach a plumbing attachment. Rather than providing a water stream from beneath the toilet lid, these attachments are more like hand-held sprayer, similar to those found on a kitchen sink.

BENEFITS OF BIDETS
REDUCES TOILET PAPER USAGE Bidet users assuredly use less toilet paper than their toilet-only counterparts. How much less is a matter of preference and practice. Some use the spray to clean and a square or two to dab dry. Others pat the region with a washcloth once clean. Automatic air drying eliminates the need for toilet paper altogether. Reducing T.P. consumption equals less clogs to your plumbing system. Your wallet will also thank you. Plus, you can take pride in reducing household waste and transportation emissions related to buying packaged toilet tissue. Of course, there’s also the convenience of not having to rely on a supply of toilet paper, as we all remember from the 2020 T.P. shortage in the early days of the pandemic. A TUSHY representative said the company saw a huge surge of orders during that time, proving the point that bidets can add to self-sufficiency.
INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS FOR BIDETS
Freestanding and combined bidets are basic plumbing fixtures so hooking them up is similar to plumbing a toilet. For aftermarket attachments, a splitter is inserted into the hose between the water source and the toilet. The diverted hose goes to the bidet. This type of bidet offers only cold water, but if your toilet is near your sink, you can hook up a model with temperature control options using a few more hose attachments. Whether you find yourself using a standalone, seat mounted or wall hanging model, bidets are easy to use with controls mounted to the wall or to the toilet.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY Then there’s the environmental issues. According to TUSHY, “On average, we use 57 sheets of T.P. every single day. That’s 36 billion rolls every year. This alone results in the loss of 15 million trees, 437 billion gallons of water, and 253,000 tons of bleach.” Similarly, A discussion on the topic on How Stuff Works points out, “Almost 90% of toilet paper sold in the U.S. comes from the virgin boreal forests of Canada, which cover about 60 percent of the country.
