THE INS AND OUTS OF YOUR GAS FIREPLACE

Few things are cozier than a fire on a cold winter’s night. If your home is equipped with a gas fireplace, clicking on the heat is nearly instant, mess-free, and efficient. However, like every other system, sometimes gas fireplaces don’t perform the way they are supposed to. The results of a malfunction can range from minor inconvenience to a dangerous situation. Knowing the ins and outs of your gas fireplace will help you troubleshoot issues to keep the heat safely flowing. When you have a problem, look for power, spark, and gas.

CHECK FOR POWER

If your gas fireplace isn’t turning on, the first diagnostic step is to verify it is getting power. Not all gas fireplaces rely on electricity to function. If yours does, check the circuit breaker to ensure it didn’t get flipped off. Also, check that all electrical connections are plugged in or properly attached. Run a current detector along the line to identify issues if you think it’s a power issue.

CHECK FOR SPARK

Check to make sure you’re getting a spark by watching the burner assembly while turning the unit on. You should see a blue static-like spark in the area of the pilot light. If you don’t see a spark, check that the ignition module is plugged in. Also, try cleaning the parts as outlined below.
