PUT IT ON COASTERS
For large or heavy items, such as a table saw, shelving unit, or workbench, put them on locking coasters so you can move them out of the way when not in use. The ability to move things around means the space can be used as a workshop one day and a parking area the next. It also means being able to put shelving units close together to store items while still providing easy access to individual totes and boxes when needed.
USE PEGBOARD
Pegboard is an efficient and often underutilized storage tool. It’s a great way to display tools, complete with painted outlines if desired, yet it’s also wonderful for corralling small items. Simply attach baskets to hold hand tools, gardening supplies, gloves, hardware, and shop rags. Larger sheets can be mounted higher on the wall to hold long-handled tools such as shovels, rakes, and leaf blowers.
HOOK IT UP
Strong hooks are another valuable tool in the fight for garage storage. Anchor them into beams to mount ladders, bikes, golf bags, and other large items that occupy precious floor space.
USE THE CEILING
CABINETS
The highest points in the garage are often the least used. However, the ceiling is the perfect place to mount storage racks. Store seldom-used items like holiday decorations or the kids’ childhood keepsakes. In addition to providing additional shelving, you can attach hooks to the bottom of the rack to hang bulky items like crab pots, limb trimmers, sleds, or snowboards. Additionally, two S-hooks with a rod between them creates a hanging rack for winterwear or SCUBA gear.
Every garage benefits from cabinets. They’re essential for staying organized while keeping things out of sight. Use thin cabinets for hardware and automotive products. Larger cabinets can house anything from paint to bike supplies. You’ll get the most efficient use of space with adjustable shelves you can shift as the contents change. If your current cabinets aren’t efficient, consider relocating them higher, lower, or to another part of the garage.
