BEDROOMS
Whether it’s a kid’s room full of toys or a guest bedroom, making the most of bedrooms means using all the space and incorporating dual-function items throughout.
BED STORAGE
USE EVERY INCH OF THE CLOSET The bedroom closet is one of the least utilized storage spaces in the house. Start by sorting through every item in your closet so you know what you need space for. If you have a lot of hanging space, consider hanging things you haven’t before, such as jeans, shorts, or t-shirts. If you have limited hanging space, fold anything that doesn’t have to be hung. In tall closets, attach a second rod to the top rod with a long metal hook to double the hanging space. Include shoe storage in the form of a multi-tiered shoe rack or shelves attached to the wall. You can also use an over-the-door shoe organizer or add additional shelves for shoes housed in boxes. Most closets have unused space above the hanging clothes and top shelf. Adding a shelf or shelves to that space allows you to store off- season clothes, paperwork, or other rarely-used items.
The area below your bed provides copious storage space. However, it can be difficult to access and look cluttered. To increase space, elevate your bed on risers. Then build drawers that roll in and out. For infrequent use, flat storage containers will do the trick too. Use a bed skirt to hide the storage below. Above the bed, employ a headboard with built-in shelving. It’s the perfect spot for a bit of decor as well as room for books and sleep masks.
STORAGE TRUNK
Place a trunk, cedar chest, or bench at the foot of the bed to hold sentimental treasures or extra blankets.
IMPROVE DRESSER EFFICIENCY
As with the kitchen linens, properly folding or rolling clothes will provide twice as much room in your dresser drawers. Remove what you have, sort what you want to keep, roll items, and place them back into the drawer. You’ll be amazed how much more room you have. Drawer sorters also help make the most of your drawer space. Use soft-sided fabric sorters for flexibility. Then fill them with socks, underwear, handkerchiefs, and other small items.
OFFICE
In the modern age of technology, we don’t need as much paper storage as we used to. Most offices require little more than a desk and perhaps a bookcase and/or file cabinet. However, for additional storage, use decor pieces like photo boxes or baskets. If your office is also your spare bedroom, bring in a hide-a-bed or install a Murphy bed so you can keep it tucked away when not in use. Maximizing storage in your home is all about creativity and efficiency. By rethinking unused spaces and implementing smart organizational tools, you can free up room for everyday activities and establish a sense of order and peace in your living space.
GO HIGH
One space that’s rarely used in any bedroom is the top foot or two of wall space. Make use of it with a shelf that runs from one corner to another. Create the width you want for the items you need to store. Then you can use it for books, boxed shoes, photo albums, hat boxes, or myriad other items.
