PRIORITIZING PLANNED SPACES

Open floating shelves are another common design element associated with modern farmhouse design. This choice isn’t for everyone though and as Alisha points out, cabinetry can be customized to fit the client’s lifestyle: “You see a lot of open floating shelves in modern farmhouse [design], but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to. You can still capture the style they want and get them some closed cabinets— some very planned spaces—understanding how you live.” This approach is helpful for clients who may not want all their kitchen supplies and pantry goods exposed, preferring a neater, more orderly approach. Above all, you want to feel comfortable in your own home, so if you have a large family and keep a good stock of food preparation materials on hand, Alisha suggests using closed cabinets rather than open shelves. Options include installing doorways or a closed cabinet tree so anything you perceive as messy stays neatly stored out of sight. It's important to appreciate that you can and should embrace the realities of your lifestyle to create an aesthetic that aligns with your daily needs. There is a way to approach interior design that works for everyone Alisha emphasizes, noting this also includes busy families “with kids running around and backpacks on the floor and homework on the counter, there's a way to design that creates a pleasing and almost, like, calming effect, [yet acknowledges a] busy lifestyle.”
