Give Your Kitchen a New Splash

4

HOME SWEET HOME Magazine

Your kitchen is the heart of your home—and small changes here can make a big impact. If your backsplash is outdated, damaged, or just plain dull, this is your invitation to change it. A new backsplash not only protects your walls, it can also add polish and personality to your space. It can even boost your home’s value—all without the cost or chaos of a full renovation. Whether you're craving timeless tilework or curious about quicker methods that still look sharp, this guide gives you everything you need to create a kitchen backdrop that feels fresh, finished, and fully yours.

First, we will cover traditional tiling:

Materials you’ll need:

• Backsplash tiles • Caulking (For a cohesive look, purchase caulking in a shade that matches your grout.) • Grout (This is available pre-mixed.) • Sealer (You may or may not need a sealer. Read the directions on your tile and grout to determine if you need a sealant.) • Thin-set mortar or tile adhesive • Tile spacers

Tools you’ll need to have on hand:

• Angle grinder with a diamond blade • Bucket • Drop cloth or plastic • Drywall tray (for mortar & grout) • Drywall primer • Hammer and a flat putty knife • Grout floater • Large sponge • Laser level (optional, but highly recommended) • Snap tile cutter or tile wet saw • Trowel • Tile edge (This will conceal the exposed tile edges.) • Tile spacers • Trowel • Wall scuffer

July 2025

Step 1: Measure the area you intend to tile When you have determined the space you want to tile, you need to measure the area to calculate the square footage. A good rule of thumb when purchasing tile is to buy an extra 20% because you will lose some when cutting the tile to fit. If you are using small tiles, you can expect less waste, when working with larger tiles, you will experience more. Step 2: Choose your tile Now that you have measurements, it’s time for the fun part—choose your tile! You’ll have lots of types to choose from in ceramic, glass, and porcelain in a plethora of styles. If you are thinking of something eco-conscious or simply more whimsical, consider these options: 1. Post-consumer or post-industrial recycled tiles are available in glass, ceramic, and clay. They look like standard tiles and are available in a wide variety of colors and shapes. These tiles are created from an amalgamation of recycled materials, including ceramic, clay, glass, and porcelain.

Step 3: Prepare the walls Be sure to cut the electricity by flipping the electrical breaker off. Take the outlet covers off of all wall sockets and pull the electrical outlets out so you can tile around these openings. If you are applying tiles to a painted wall, it may be necessary to use a wall scuffer so the tiles will adhere properly. If the backsplash is going on unfinished drywall, there is no need to do anything. You are ready to go!

2. Consider eco-friendly removable wallpaper for your backsplash.

3. Are you a wine drinker who loves to save corkscrews? Incorporate these into your kitchen décor by applying them end to end in a horizontal pattern to form a distinctive backsplash that will also serve as a great conversation starter!

6

HOME SWEET HOME Magazine

Step 4: Remove your old tile or backsplash If you already have a backsplash, you may be hesitant to redo it for fear of damaging the wall when removing the old one. There will be some defacement, but the new backsplash will cover it, and there are ways to minimize the damage. Use a flat tool like a putty knife and a hammer to drive behind the edge of a tile as far as possible to separate the tile from the old mortar. When you are ready to begin prying the old tiles off, it is best to start at a wall stud. This is because working against a stud, you are less likely to push your prying tool through the wall.

Step 6: Install the tiles and make any cuts necessary When applying your tiles, you will want to use your laser level to make sure your lines are perfectly vertical or plumb. You will also want to pay attention to your horizontal line, so it remains level. Using tile spacers is great for helping you keep your vertical and horizontal lines straight. Trying to decide between using a score and snap tool or an angle grinder? The former is a great way to easily make basic cuts at corners and edges. For more difficult cuts, you will need to use the latter, the angle grinder with a diamond blade. Bear in mind that a snap cutter can only cut in straight lines. This means you can’t use one to cut openings for things like outlets. Don’t worry if your cuts aren’t absolutely perfect. Once the grout is applied, it will camouflage any imperfections.

Step 5: Calculate your starting point

Using your laser level, use the vertical line to pinpoint the center of the oven. Then place your first tiles on either side of that line. It’s crucial that you measure as you go in this project, so your tiles are evenly placed and the design is proportional. You are now ready to mix your mortar (unless you bought premixed). The mortar will have directions on the bag, so just follow those. Be sure to note the mortar’s set time (how long it will take to harden). You will want to mix the mortar in small batches, so it doesn’t harden while you are working. You may find using a drill with a stirring attachment will make quick work of mixing mortar.

7

July 2025

Step 7: Clean tiles with a wet rag and add grout When your mortar is set, use a wet rag to clean the tiles. If you didn’t purchase pre-mixed grout, go ahead and mix up a batch. It’s easy to apply with a grout floater, but if you don’t have one, you can improvise with something like a putty knife, just make sure whatever tool you use will smooth the grout out evenly. Then take your large sponge to wipe off any excess grout. Keep a large bowl nearby so you can rinse the sponge out as needed. When the water becomes dirty, dump it out and refill it with fresh water. Be sure to clean your tiles immediately so you don’t get “grout haze”, which refers to the cloudy appearance tiles take on from the grout if they aren’t washed promptly. To finish off the edges of your new backsplash, you can either use a tile Schluter edge or simply apply a line of grout. Love the idea of a new backsplash but feel you don’t have the time to go the traditional route? Or perhaps you’re the kind of person who likes to redecorate often. Peel and stick backsplash tile may be just what you need! It comes in a variety of patterns from subway brick to mosaics and geometric shapes and is incredibly easy to install. Want a New Backsplash Without All the Tools and Preparation?

8

HOME SWEET HOME Magazine

Here’s all you need:

• Peel and stick tile sheets in the design of your choice (Measure your backsplash area so you know how many sets to buy.) • Scissors

Step 1: Wash the backsplash area with plenty of hot water and soap.

Step 2: Remove all of your outlet covers.

Step 3: Decide where to start.

It’s best to start from top to bottom, moving right to left.

Step 4: Remove the paper at the back to reveal the adhesive side and apply it to your backsplash.

Note: These peel-and-stick backsplash sheets will adhere to old backsplashes or to drywall .

Step 5: When you come to electrical outlets, simply cut an open space to leave them exposed.

Step 6: Cut up individual tiles to fill in the edges along the top, bottom, and edges.

Place these pieces where needed, and you are done!

No matter which method or type of material you use, a new backsplash will instantly give your kitchen a fresh, updated look.

Fun Decorations and Games You Can Use to Make Your Fourth of July Barbecue Memorable

2. Stars-and-Stripes Straws Your lemonade and other beverages will taste all the sweeter when sipped from these fun DIY stars-and-stripes straws. Encourage the kids to help you with this fun activity using safety scissors! To make: You will need a star-shaped paper punch to cut out star shapes and a pack of red and blue striped straws. Take each star shape and make two small slits the width of the straw in the center of the star. Thread the star over the straw.

If you are planning a Fourth of July barbecue this year, you’ll want to offer your friends and family more than good company, great food, and conversation. With the right decorations and fun games, you can really get them in the patriotic spirit and make this one holiday celebration they won’t soon forget! Nothing sets the mood like festive decorations. Below you will find a list of easy-to-make trimmings that will quickly set your party apart from others!

Decorations: 1. Tie Wreath

This first DIY decoration gives a fun and thrifty approach to the traditional wreath by taking old men’s ties and forming them into an unusual but cool door wreath. Peruse your dad's or grandad’s closet or check out a nearby second- hand shop to find an assortment of about 10 vintage ties in patterns that feature red, white, and blue. To make: You will need to measure each tie from its widest end and then cut it until it is approximately 7 1/2 inches long. Once you have cut all the ties, arrange the pieces around a 12-inch wooden craft ring, making sure the pointed ends are facing outward, and the cut ends are facing inward. Next, fold the cut ends over the inside edge of the craft ring. Hot glue in place, and repeat the process, making sure the craft ring is completely covered.

3. Bandana Napkin Ring This is as simple as can be, but adds a splash of color to your table settings! Set your table with your flatware on the napkins of your choice, and then bundle them together by tying a strip of a red or blue bandana around the bundle.

*This idea is a terrific way to celebrate Father’s Day as well!

11

4. Bandana-Covered Pots Bandanas are great for all sorts of craft projects, including this one: a bandana-covered ceramic pot. 5. Painted Fourth of July Clay Pot To make: Attach the bandana to the exterior of the desired clay pot using Mod Podge (a versatile glue, sealer, and finisher). Fold the bandana fabric an inch over the top rim of the pot and cut off any extra fabric as needed. Allow to dry thoroughly, then fill with seasonal blooms or ferns, or whatever you desire. • Prepare your pot and saucer by removing any attached tags. • Paint the pot white inside and out. Let it dry thoroughly. Apply a second coat if necessary. • Next, the terracotta saucer should be painted blue on all sides and edges. Let it dry. Apply a second coat if needed. Note : The pot and saucer will need some time to dry between coats, but the paint does dry pretty quickly on the clay surface. The drying time will depend on the thickness of the coats of paint applied. • Using a small flat paintbrush, paint red stripes vertically around the flower pot. Let dry and then follow with a second coat if desired. If young children are attempting this project, you can help them space the vertical stripes by using painter’s tape to block off white stripes.

• Once the red stripes have dried, you will want to paint a blue strip approximately one inch wide around the flower pot’s base. If the white and red paint you applied earlier is bleeding through the blue, apply a second coat. • To top off this project, you will need five silver stars. You can either use silver glitter craft foam and cut your star shapes from that or if you want to make it simpler, get five silver star stickers and use those. Space the stars so that they go all the way around and then glue them onto the blue band at the bottom of the clay pot. • Lastly, use a glue gun to secure the flower pot and saucer together so that it looks like Uncle Sam’s hat! You can add whatever you wish inside the flower pot. One idea is to add red, white, and blue shredded paper and wrapped candy to create a patriotic candy dish! You and your guests will have plenty to do while you wait for the fireworks to start with this fun list of games to choose from!

Games

1. Patriotic Yard Bowling: Start saving your two-liter soda bottles now for this fun Fourth of July Game. These bottles will act as your “bowling pins,” and you’ll need 10 of them to play. You’ll want to paint them in variations of red, white, and blue, in plenty of time before your party, so they have ample time to dry. When it’s time to play, simply divide into two teams, set the bottles up in a pyramid shape, and use the ball of your choice to try to knock them down and beat the opposing team. 2. American History Trivia: This is a fun way for you and your guests to test your knowledge of American History in general and 4th of July History in particular! You can buy sets of cards for this game online, but with some planning and some quick searches online, you can create your own questions and answers about what deeds patriots are best known for and what events helped shape the course of the War of Independence. Simply compile a list of questions all about American history and 4th of July history, and write each question on a numbered card. Place the answers on a separate sheet of paper numbered to correspond with the question cards. Players should take turns drawing cards and giving their answers. Whoever has the most correct answers by the time the cards run out is the winner.

3. Kids Fourth of July Scavenger Hunt:

5. Water Balloon Revolutionary War:

What kid doesn’t love a scavenger hunt? This fun game will keep the young ones occupied and make them feel included in the revelry! First, make a list of holiday and patriotic- themed items that will be fun to include in the scavenger hunt. Some suggestions include:

Children and kids at heart will have a ball playing this fun outside game! First, the group should be split into two teams. Both teams are supplied with buckets of water balloons and separated at a reasonable distance. The goal of the game is for each team to make their way over to the other team’s base while avoiding getting hit with water balloons. If a player is hit with a water balloon, they automatically become a member of the other team. The team that manages to get the most players across to the other team’s base without getting hit is declared the winner.

• A flag • Something red • Something white • Something blue

• A copy of the Declaration of Independence • Something with a President’s face on it

Use your imagination! Let all players know that the first contestant to find everything on the list wins. Give each participant a copy of the list of items to be found or if they are old enough to have cell phones, have them take a photo of the master list. You may want to consider getting a small prize to reward the child who wins this game.

4. Who Am I? July 4th Edition:

This can be played as a straight guessing game or, if you prefer, it can be played as a form of Pictionary. Each contestant picks the name of a historical person from the Revolutionary War era. When it’s their turn to play, they will either give oral clues about their identity or if playing the Pictionary version, will draw things to give the other players hints as to who they are. Whoever guesses correctly most often wins the game!

Trees play a vital role in any landscape. From providing shade in the summer to enhancing curb appeal and increasing property value, it’s worth incorporating them into your backyard design. However, don’t overlook the care requirements for your leafy friends. Although it might seem like trees are self-sustaining, they need frequent attention such as pruning, disease prevention, and feeding. Without it, your trees can become overgrown, diseased, or even hazardous. The good news is you don’t need to be an arborist to maintain the trees in your yard. With a little knowledge and routine effort, you can ensure your trees remain strong and beautiful for years to come. To empower you on that journey, we spoke with experts in the field who helped us identify an action plan for tree selection and care. The Must- Knows of Selecting and Caring for Trees in Your Backyard Landscape

18

HOME SWEET HOME Magazine

Plan for New Trees The best way to ensure success with your trees is to make the right selections in the planning stage. You’ll want to consider location, climate, sunlight, and soil conditions. We asked Michael Clarke, landscape architect/horticulturalist and founder of Yardwork, about resources to help homeowners find the best tree options. This is what he had to say. “Homeowners can access several key resources to find the best tree species suited to their region, such as local agricultural extension offices, often university- affiliated, which can provide information on trees that thrive in your area. They can help with climate zones, growth habits, and disease resistance. Additionally, websites like the Arbor Day Foundation, the National Arbor Day Tree Nursery, or regional botanical gardens provide detailed information on tree species based on geography, climate, and other factors. Local nurseries or garden centers often stock plants and trees suited to the local climate, and their staff can offer valuable advice on selecting trees for your garden. Finally, it's always a good idea to check the USDA website to determine your growing zones and the Sunset Garden website, which also has zones [to] help guide plant selections based on cold hardiness.” Additionally, we talked to Tammy Sons, CEO of TN Nursery based in Tennessee. She added to Michael’s thoughts saying, “Choose plants hardy for their planting zone. That’s the #1 thing anyone needs to know before choosing any tree or plant. I like our IP zone detector at tnnursery.net. It's a popup that sees your location, tells you your planting zone, and then directs you to choose plants ideally suited for your zone. Also, you can use the USDA hardiness zone map, which is accessible online.

This map shows what zone you are in and is highly accurate.”

She also outlined a few other key considerations, recommending to buyers, “Always check plant labeling to see what location, soil type, and sunlight requirements to plant in before planting. Some plants also require well-drained soils, so make sure you check this as well. If it needs well-drained soil, plant it on the top of a slight hill or slope for best growth results.”

19

July 2025

The Benefits of Native Trees You may have heard about the advantages of planting trees that are native to your region. There are many reasons for that. Think about how nature balances and supports itself without human intervention. That balance is created by sharing resources between plants and animals. The same concept applies to your yard. Sons explains, “Native plants enhance the composition of the soil, add nutrients, and improve all of them simultaneously. They are hardy, disease and pest-resistant, and you seldom have to worry about sprinklers on them. They are 90% drought tolerant.” Clarke agrees, saying, “Native trees are already adapted to local conditions, such as the climate, soil, and pests, and therefore require less water, fertilizer, and pesticides, making them more sustainable in your landscape. Native trees also support local wildlife, providing habitat and food for birds, insects, and mammals, helping maintain local biodiversity and ecological balance by supporting the species that evolved in the area.” While native trees require less maintenance and are more likely to thrive, Clarke warns, “Native species aren't always the best option, especially for homeowners that want trees with specific appearances, colors, or shapes that they can't get from native species or they want to create an exotic or themed garden that incorporates non-native species. In some cases, non-native species may be more resilient to changing climate conditions and better able to withstand heat waves, droughts, or pests that native species can't endure as well. Additionally, non-native species often grow faster and easier than native species, making them more suitable when trying to achieve shade and privacy quickly.”

20

HOME SWEET HOME Magazine

Check City Ordinances

Clarke mentioned that the type of tree you choose can maximize return on investment. For example, “Maples like the Silver Maple and Red Maple are fast- growing and adaptable to various soil types. Oaks like the Pin Oak and Red Oak are long-lasting and provide ample shade, and Eastern Redbuds are really nice, small, ornamental trees that are easy to grow and add beautiful spring flowers.”

As part of the planning process, consider your neighborhood and city restrictions. Sons explains, “Some communities require permits to plant trees, and some even offer location sightings. They will not allow trees to be planted near power lines or water lines underground. As a general rule of thumb, this is important, whether or not there are ordinances, for protection against damage.” Her advice also highlights the importance of having utility locators mark gas, plumbing, and cable lines before you start to dig.

Prune Properly

Most backyard trees require pruning to maintain health and vitality. However, incorrect techniques can introduce disease or make trees vulnerable to weather- related damage. Timing your pruning is essential. Sons says, “The best time to prune anything is in Autumn, just before frost starts. You can also prune before dormancy ends, near March. In warmer states, it definitely needs to be in whatever month dormancy is in. For example, in FL, dormancy is late Dec-Feb, so always, as a rule of thumb, prune in the dormant season.” Clarke further explains, “For deciduous trees like Oaks, Maples, and Elms, the best time for pruning is during the dormant season, typically in late winter or early spring, before new growth starts. This reduces the risk of disease and allows for better healing. For evergreen trees like Pine, Spruce, and Firs, pruning is best done in late spring or early summer, after new growth has emerged but before it hardens off.”

Make Budget-Friendly Choices

An afternoon perusing trees at your local nursery can easily result in sticker shock. Trees are not a cheap investment, however, there are ways to maximize the value of your purchases. Sons recommends intermixing a variety of plants alongside trees. In addition, she points out the value of starting with smaller trees instead of mature options. She says, “Budget-friendly options are bare-root plants and small items, like perennials and ferns. They are much lower priced than those in containers and at a 65-70% price reduction, not to mention about 400% less on shipping costs. If you get them dormant, they are just as hardy as containerized plants and are only more affordable.”

Sons also reminds us to “Never prune too far back. Prune at a 90-degree angle to prevent limb rot.”

SeJputelmy 2b0er252024 21

In review, it’s important to choose the right trees for your location and ensure proper placement so you don’t encounter power lines or have issues with a large mature tree uprooting the sidewalk or breaking plumbing lines. You’ll also want to perform routine pruning to cut away dead and diseased branches and to thin the tree so it can receive optimal sunlight. In addition, know the water and fertilization requirements of your tree. Sons summarizes saying, “Tree care, dependent upon species, shouldn’t be dreaded. Choose trees wisely. Choose ones that are low maintenance to prevent high maintenance. Native trees are easy to grow, whereas hybrid trees can be tough to grow. Also, something Provide Routine Care

to take into consideration is the upkeep. For example, a fast-growing tree like a Silver Maple tree grows 2-4 feet per year under the right soil conditions. A tree like this requires a little more maintenance because it must often be pruned to control branches. Other examples, like the Bald Cypress tree also a problem because if it’s planted near sidewalks (walkways) or concrete, the roots tend to grow on top of the soil, and when they are planted within 15 feet of pavement or concrete, they will protrude through and destroy it. Do your homework on low-maintenance trees that will not get so tall they harm powerlines or those that have roots that may lay on the soil's surface. This is also problematic for water lines and destroys lawnmowers. Oak trees are especially bad for this.”
