Step 4: Remove your old tile or backsplash If you already have a backsplash, you may be hesitant to redo it for fear of damaging the wall when removing the old one. There will be some defacement, but the new backsplash will cover it, and there are ways to minimize the damage. Use a flat tool like a putty knife and a hammer to drive behind the edge of a tile as far as possible to separate the tile from the old mortar. When you are ready to begin prying the old tiles off, it is best to start at a wall stud. This is because working against a stud, you are less likely to push your prying tool through the wall.
Step 6: Install the tiles and make any cuts necessary When applying your tiles, you will want to use your laser level to make sure your lines are perfectly vertical or plumb. You will also want to pay attention to your horizontal line, so it remains level. Using tile spacers is great for helping you keep your vertical and horizontal lines straight. Trying to decide between using a score and snap tool or an angle grinder? The former is a great way to easily make basic cuts at corners and edges. For more difficult cuts, you will need to use the latter, the angle grinder with a diamond blade. Bear in mind that a snap cutter can only cut in straight lines. This means you can’t use one to cut openings for things like outlets. Don’t worry if your cuts aren’t absolutely perfect. Once the grout is applied, it will camouflage any imperfections.
Step 5: Calculate your starting point
Using your laser level, use the vertical line to pinpoint the center of the oven. Then place your first tiles on either side of that line. It’s crucial that you measure as you go in this project, so your tiles are evenly placed and the design is proportional. You are now ready to mix your mortar (unless you bought premixed). The mortar will have directions on the bag, so just follow those. Be sure to note the mortar’s set time (how long it will take to harden). You will want to mix the mortar in small batches, so it doesn’t harden while you are working. You may find using a drill with a stirring attachment will make quick work of mixing mortar.
